OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

In 2016, the Bridge Scholars Program was launched to assist American minority students, and in May of 2021 the first 12 students under the scholarship graduated from BJU. In October 2020, the Bridge Scholars Program was renamed the Opportunity Scholars Program, because at its very essence, it is about giving an opportunity to those who have not always had access to Christian higher education.

CURRENTLY AT BJU

Currently, 12.8% of our student body is from the American minority population. We want to see this percentage grow at BJU to more accurately reflect the college population.

HELP MEET A NEED

Many minority students face insurmountable odds and without extra help, they will not be able to afford attending college. We realize these talented and hard-working students will receive help from somewhere—and we want it to be from BJU.

OUR VISION

As part of this program, roughly 45 American minority students are helped each year. We want to continue to see the number of Opportunity Scholars on campus grow.

TIMOTHY & WORLD FUNDS

The Timothy and WORLD Funds support international BJU students who want to return to their home countries for the sake of the Gospel.

TIMOTHY FUND

The Timothy Fund specifically provides for international ministry students who desire to return to their home country, plant churches, and spread the Gospel. This fund enables carefully selected, worthy young men from the Third World, who are called to preach, to come from other nations to BJU.

The Timothy Scholarship Program is funded in three ways: regular monthly offering of the faculty and staff, offering and honoraria received by Dr. Jones III when he is preaching away from campus, and gifts from concerned individuals and organizations (churches, mission boards, etc.).

WORLD FUND

This fund helps bring qualified students from foreign lands to BJU to receive a Christian education and then return to their homeland better equipped to serve the Lord in all walks of life.

The WORLD Fund is funded through donations. Dr. Jones III’s original intent was that believers around the world would give, on the occasion of their birthday, one dollar for every year they have been in the world. We also receive regular gifts from concerned individuals and organizations (churches, mission boards, etc.) who desire to take part in training men and women from other countries to spread the gospel.

What is an Endowed Scholarship?​

An endowed scholarship is a fund established by a donor or group of donors that is invested by BJU. The interest from the investment is then used each year to give scholarships to students. As only the interest is used, the endowment can fund scholarships in perpetuity. The BJU investment spend policy is four percent.

This fund makes a BJU education more affordable for students who want to be part of a Christian community where they can be challenged academically and thrive spiritually.

Science & Engineering Endowment

S&E provides sophisticated lab equipment, helps science educators further develop their teaching skills, and even gives students the chance to participate in real-world study programs.

As was Beneth’s practice, the Beneth Peters Jones Memorial Scholarship provides emergency or “rescue” funds for a student’s school bill. It is an endowed scholarship fund for women, with a preference for alumni families in full-time Christian service. Today, we desire to honor Beneth by continuing her pattern of giving as a means of bringing credit to her Lord.

The family of Dr. Bob M. Wood established the scholarship in his memory to financially aid a new student or a returning student to Bob Jones University.

This scholarship, given by Mrs. Letha Burdette in memory of her parents, Rowan and Doris Burdette, is open to all students.

This scholarship, established by the Estate of Lawrence Herr/Nancy Herr in memory of Lawrence Herr, is open to all students.

This scholarship, established by Charles Flesher, in honor of his wife Linda H. Flesher, is open to all financially needy students.

This scholarship, established by Mr. Ralph Matthews in honor of his daughter, Judith Matthews Grant, is open to all students.

This scholarship, established by Donna Titchenal in memory of her parents, Paul and Addie Titchenal, is open to all students.

This scholarship, established by Jeff Walker in memory of Donald E. and Demaris C. Walker, is open to all students.

Minority Scholarship

This scholarship is available to African-American, African, Pacific Islander, Asian, and Native American students enrolled at BJU. It was created in 2000 to meet the need for Christ-honoring leaders throughout the U.S. and abroad. Our goal is to enable more students who are minorities to pursue a Christian education at BJU, so they may be effective leaders who honor God and stand for righteousness and truth.

This partial scholarship may be used to cover tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at BJU.

The Minority Scholarship is open to students of African-American, Pacific Islander, Asian, and Native American descent who are enrolled at BJU and demonstrate academic ability, spiritual leadership, and financial need. Undergraduate students will be given consideration before graduate students.

Hispanic Assistance Scholarship

This scholarship (formerly the Hispanic Assistance Fund) is available to Hispanic students enrolled at BJU.

It was created in 2004 to meet the need for Christ-honoring leaders in the Hispanic community throughout the U.S. and abroad. Our goal is to enable more Hispanic students to pursue a Christian education at BJU, so they may be effective leaders who honor God and stand for righteousness and truth.

This partial scholarship may be used to cover tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at BJU.

Eligible students must be enrolled at BJU, be of Hispanic descent, and should demonstrate academic ability, spiritual leadership, and financial need. Undergraduate students will be given consideration before graduate students.

Dr. Billy & Trudy Kim Endowment

To honor the life and ministry of loyal alumni Dr. Billy and Trudy Kim, BJU established this scholarship to assist financially needy international students who have a desire to fulfill the Great Commission by reaching across cultural lines and effectively proclaiming the Word.

Dr. Kim, who professed his faith in Jesus Christ while an international student at Bob Jones Academy, received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bob Jones University. He also met his wife Trudy at BJU.

Dr. Kim has dedicated more than 55 years of his life to serving Christ as a pastor, evangelist, translator, chaplain, chairman and president of major Gospel ministries. He is the founder of the Capital Bible College and Suwon Central Christian Academy in Korea. He has also grown a radio network that pushes the Gospel into restricted access nations.

Tax-deductible gifts to the Kim Scholarship may be made payable to BJU, Inc. with “Kim Scholarship” designated on the memo line or by selecting “Dr. Billy and Trudy Kim Endowment” as an option on our online giving form.

League Disability Scholarship

The League Disability Scholarship is available for college students whose disabilities or health-related limitations incur additional expenses beyond those of their peers. It is offered on behalf of Donald K. League, the first blind student to graduate from Bob Jones University, who desires to see Christians with disabilities receive the unique benefits of a Christian education.

The scholarship aids students studying at Bob Jones University by providing for special equipment and assistance including (but not limited to):

  • A reading machine for the library so students who are blind will have access to the books
  • Specialized computer software
  • Textbooks (when more than one copy must be purchased) for those who will put the book on tape
  • The cost of providing special assistance, if required

Caleb Chisom Scholarship

Caleb was an avid reader and a diligent student in all of his homeschool subjects. Growing up in a rural community in Virginia, he developed a great love for the outdoors and for all the activities that a boy his age could enjoy.

However, there was one subject and activity that Caleb enjoyed above all others–drawing. Even at the age of 3, Caleb would sit quietly for hours, pencil in hand, drawing pictures. The dominant request at his birthday was always for more art supplies.

Having accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at the age of 7, Caleb grew in his love for Christ. His primary goal was to attend Bob Jones University to receive a degree in art. At age 13, Caleb formulated a plan to earn the funds for college; he certainly was not afraid of hard work to achieve a special goal.

However, the Lord had some different plans for Caleb, and through it all He showed Himself faithful. In 2001, at the age of 9, Caleb was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Following surgery and treatments, he recovered and resumed his enthusiasm for learning and for art. Then in 2005 he was diagnosed with a second brain tumor that was inoperable. On July 18, 2006, at age 14, Caleb went home to be with his Lord and Savior.

James A. Martin Scholarship

The James A. Martin Scholarship Fund has been set up in memory of a godly BJU professor who prepared graduates to be principled and to see the business world as a great mission field—the “ministry of business.”

Allen Jacobs Scholarship Fund

BJU has established an annual scholarship for a Criminal Justice student in memory of Greenville police officer Allen Jacobs. The scholarship will be awarded to a criminal justice student each year at the Criminal Justice Challenge Coin Ceremony during Commencement week.

All gifts to the Allen Jacobs Scholarship Fund are tax-deductible.

Jonna Carper Scholarship Fund

The Jonna Carper Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Jonna Carper–a long-time BJU faculty member in the School of Education–by her husband, Al Carper.

The purpose of the Jonna Carper Scholarship Fund is three-fold.

  1. To assist the School of Education’s Teachers for Tomorrow program in identifying and nurturing high school juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a teaching career through a degree at BJU.
  2. To provide assistance to financially challenged students in BJU’s School of Education.
  3. To assist teachers to come to BJU for additional summer training.

 

Philip & Marilyn Smith Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship, established by Philip D. Smith in memory of his wife Marilyn, is open to junior and senior teacher education and nursing majors.

Anderson Scholarship

This scholarship, established by Debra Anderson Miller in memory of her mother, Dorothy Anderson, is for financially needy students studying nursing who will serve in a hospital, clinic, doctor’s office or community setting.

Donny Jacobs Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship, established by Don and Tammie Jacobs in memory of their son, Donny, is awarded to rising Junior Nursing students who demonstrate a high level of nursing skills during their sophomore hospital practicum.

Edwin Wheeler Memorial Endowment

This scholarship, established by Priscilla Wheeler in memory of her husband, Edwin Wheeler, provides financial assistance to students in healthcare related majors.

Esther Ladies Scholarship

This scholarship, established by Thomas Lamb in memory of his wife, Mary Esther Lamb, provides financial assistance to financially needy, female students in healthcare related majors. Priority is given to female students who desire to use  their medical skills on the mission field to advance the cause of Christ.

Philip & Marilyn Smith Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship, established by David Boyd in memory of his parents, Jesse and Edith Boyd, provides assistance to financially needy students studying for the ministry, particularly those enrolled in the BJU Seminary.

Dr. T. Walter Brashier and Christine M. Brashier Family Endowed Scholarship

Established by Dr. T. Walter and Christine Brashier to assist both undergraduate and graduate students in a course of study leading to a degree in church related vocation, especially preaching and missions.

Marshall P. Neal Scholarship

To honor the legacy of Marshall P. Neal and his passion for the work of God, the Marshall P. Neal Scholarship has been established to assist financially needy young men who are training to serve as pastors, evangelists, Bible teachers, or missionaries of the Gospel. Particular attention is given to post-graduate students.

Dr. Neal dedicated 50 years of his life to serve the Lord as a professor at BJU; he mentored and trained hundreds of young men for the ministry. He also served as dean of the School of Religion from 1964-1978.

Denise J. Misner Scholarship

This scholarship, given by Gilbert and Lorraine Misner in memory of their daughter, Denise J. Misner, is for financially needy students who are preparing for Christian service and who are employed during their education.

The Dwight and Gwen Gustafson Music Scholarship Endowment

In order to perpetuate the Gustafsons’ legacy of artistry in the service of God’s glory, the Dwight and Gwen Gustafson Music Scholarship Endowment was established to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the BJU Division of Music academic programs and/or ensembles who demonstrate both a strong musical potential and a commitment to glorifying the Lord and serving others through music. Scholarship funds provide recipients the opportunity to study with BJU’s highly qualified Christian faculty as they develop their vision for pursuing and sharing the beauty of God through musical excellence and redemptive artistry in church ministries, schools, and other vocational careers and communities around the world.

The Mary Alice Stitt Endowed Scholarship

Mary Alice Stitt grew up in a home where God, music, and education were part of daily life.  She had a servant’s heart.  This endowment is established by her nephew, Tom Stitt, and his wife, Jan Kissimon, to honor her memory by making a difference in the lives of young, like-minded individuals. The scholarship is for financially needy students studying percussion, piano, or strings in the Division of Music with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
